Charles “Bad News” Conwell sets sights on becoming a world champion under the Golden Boy Promotions banner. The Cleveland native has a decorative amateur career that includes becoming the 2015 National Golden Gloves champion, a two-time U.S.A Boxing Youth National Champion and winning the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2016.
Following a layoff of nearly 17 months, Conwell stepped back into the ring on the undercard of Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in April 2024, where he secured a sixth-round technical knockout over Nathaniel Gallimore. He maintained that momentum with two additional fights that year, capping off 2024 in style by handing Argentina’s unbeaten Gerardo Vergara his first loss with a dominant seventh-round knockout. Most recently, Conwell’s unbeaten streak came to an end in a hard-fought battle with Mexico’s Jorge Garcia Perez, where he left it all in the ring, but fell short on the judges’ cards in a close split decision. Taking the loss in stride, he’s returning to the drawing board with renewed focus and a clear mission to bounce back stronger.
Ranked No. 4 by the WBC, No. 2 by the WBO and No. 14 by the IBF, Conwell is confident that the junior middleweight division belongs to him, and he’s eager to make a big comeback to prove that there’s “Bad News” waiting for the 154-pound division.
