Born in Avenal, CA, to Mexican immigrant parents, Jose Ramirez has become a proud symbol of both his Mexican heritage and his American roots inside and behind the ropes. His determined fighting style, strong fundamentals and relentless work ethic have led him to represent the United States in the 2012 London Olympics alongside Errol Spence Jr., Joseph “JoJo” Diaz, Jamel Herring and Claressa Shields.

A significant turning point in Ramirez’s professional career came in 2018 when he won the WBC Super Lightweight world title by defeating Amir Imam via unanimous decision. The victory marked his arrival on the world stage and solidified his position as one of the top fighters in the division. Ramirez successfully defended his title multiple times, including impressive victories over world-class opponents such as Antonio Orozco and Jose Zepeda, halting then-WBO champion Maurice Hooker in 2019 to unify, and upholding his titles against Viktor Postol.

In 2021, Ramirez faced Josh Taylor in a highly anticipated bout for the undisputed super lightweight championship. Despite his effort, Ramirez lost to Taylor by unanimous decision. Ramirez bounced back from that loss with a three-fight winning streak, reestablishing himself as a strong contender in the super lightweight division. However, his momentum was halted in November 2024 when he suffered a defeat against Arnold Barboza Jr. in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

In his most recent bout, Ramirez faced former undisputed champion Devin Haney in a highly anticipated matchup staged in the heart of Times Square. Despite the loss, Ramirez came forward with aggression and intent, while Haney relied on a defensive and pedestrain strategy throughout the fight.

Coached by Robert Garcia, Ramirez’s disciplined approach to training, combined with his experience in high-level competition, makes him a threat to anyone in the division. With sights on a strong comeback and the desire to once again become a world champion, Jose Ramirez’s career is far from over.
